Public consultation on the proposed wind turbine on East Marsh has ended with 87 per cent of people in favour of the idea.

Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney said: “The council will now look at the next stages to make this idea a reality.”

He added that this development would help make Hackney one of the greenest boroughs in London.

Hackney Marshes User Group had previously criticized the council for failing to publish information about the ecological impact of a turbine until midway through the consultation.

Mike Trier, of the HMUG said: “I’m sure that we will be taking a very active part in the detailed consultation to come.”

Mayor Pipe explained that planning applications from turbine operators would have to include an environmental impact assessment to show that the affect on wildlife will be minimal.

The consultation ran from 19 October to 14 December last year, and 712 people took part.

Residents will have another chance to comment when planning applications from turbine operators have been submitted.
