A 33-year-old South East London man is appearing in court this morning charged with the murder of 88-year-old great-grandmother and retired secretary Mrs Irene Barrett who was beaten and stabbed to death in her high rise flat next to the Charlton Athletic Stadium at the weekend.
Detectives believe the incident occured during a burglary at her 15th-floor flat in Valiant House, Sam Bartram Close.
Daniel Franklin from Felixstowe Road, Abbeywood, south-east London, was charged late on Tuesday and is appearing at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court this morning.
Detectives have also arrested a woman in connection with the murder enquiry which is based at Lewisham police station. Earlier a man and woman in their early thirties, who had been initially arrested, were released and eliminated from the inquiry.
A post-mortem examination in Greenwich established that Mrs Barrett had died from multiple stab wounds.
