Review: Stand to attention for Postino

Postino - Attention

Postino - Attention (2010)

Gaining widespread DJ and radio play for last year’s summer hit ‘Bushey Hill’, New Cross-based Korean beatmeister Postino returns with another deep house slab; released as an exclusive under Juno Download, his aptly titled ‘Attention’ certainly begs for some, and more.

Drawing from a funky amalgam of jazz samples, Postino has skillfully mangled them together into deep, head-nodding grooves accentuated by abstract vocal cuts and slinky electronic drums, all held down by his trademark use of crackling acoustic bass lines. Pumping jazz rides keep the shuffling beats moving, while filtered sax trills and spoken words keep the track from becoming stale.

Eschewing musical complexity for stripped down rhythms, ‘Attention’ was inspired by the stark soundscapes of minimal and tech house. 90% of the single is composed of basic music samples packaged with Logic Studio, showing off Postino’s creativity in warping the most basic of musical elements into a sophisticated (and unusually distinctive) house track.

The ‘Damn Hot’ version has a club-friendly feel – the addition of sweeping rises and expansive explosions build up tension, with whirring synthesizers injecting more energy and life into the mix. For the less dance-orientated, Postino offers a ‘Chilly’ rework that opens with retro bass hits, followed by synth bursts reminiscent of 80s synth pop. Listen for an ethereal synth solo near the bridge before the track comes to a close with plinking percussion and fuzzy bass lines. Altogether a strong house single with the potential to overtake last year’s summer hit, with different styles for fans of all genres to enjoy.
