Over 30 firefighters were needed to tackle a massive blaze in a hostel in New Cross on Wednesday night

Six people were evacuated from the building on Lewisham Way, with authorities being called to the scene at 10.01pm. A further six were evacuated from an adjacent building. However, there were no injuries reported.

The fire was under control by 1.30am, with the first and second floors being badly damaged, as well as the roof. Crews from New Cross, Greenwich, Deptford, Forest Hill, Lewisham and Lee Green stations were present at the scene.

The crews managed to stop the fire spreading to the surrounding buildings, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A neighbour, who called the fire brigade, said she was evacuated from her home on the top floor of the building next to the hostel, and not let back in till 1.30am. The woman, who asked not to be named, said that her building was undamaged by the fire, but the ground floor had been flooded by water from the fire engines’ hoses.

She said firefighters remained at the scene until 5.30am.
