Man charged with killing father in arson attack

A man charged with killing his father and a lodger by setting fire to a maisonette in Shadwell appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

Aaron Bhasin, 52, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of arson with the intent to endanger life, following the fire on Chapman Street on March 7.

Bhasin was arrested following the deaths of his father Ram Bhasin, 82, and lodger Sunil Koosuru, 29. Koosuru had only been living in the apartment one day before the fire occurred.

According to the London Fire Brigade, the fire destroyed nearly all of the second and third floors of the four-storey block. The Fire Brigade was called around 1am and quickly controlled the blaze.

Both men where declared dead at the scene and were believed to have died of smoke inhalation.

Mr. Bhasin appeared in court by a short bailing hearing, he is currently in custody ahead of a plea hearing on June 16.
