A man has been charged with the brutal murder of a 73-year-old woman from Bethnal Green.
Christopher Newton, 45, appeared in custody at Redbridge Magistrates’ Court yesterday, and was charged with the murder of Eileen Jones, 73, of Mandela House in Virginia Road which took place on Tuesday night.
Mrs Jones’ body was discovered by police near Virginia Road after being called by the London Ambulance Service at approximately 6am on Wednesday morning.
A spokesman for Gateway Housing, who looks after Mandela House, told East London Advertiser:
“This tragedy has had a profound impact on us all. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the victim’s family, with whom we have built a close relationship over the years.”
Police interviewed elderly tenants of the block to help the investigation process.
William Bremer, 87, who lives two doors down from the flat Jones lived in, said: “All we know is that someone died but not in a natural way. No one’s told us anything.
“There are lots of elderly and disabled people here. I should think people are worried.”
Three suspects, including a 46 –year-old woman were initially arrested close to the scene shortly after the body was discovered.

Thank you for your comment Pat. You have picked up on a commonly used style issue. We always use a title at the first mention and then only second names after that. It is just to make the posts look uniform but your comment is important and we perhaps need to think again about how we address victims of crime. We will discuss it.
