Football cup shows Tower Hamlets’ talent

Mayor's Cup Football Tournament Tower Hamlets

Senrab FC reached the under 14's final

A new annual football tournament has been launched in Tower Hamlets to show that, when it comes to producing star players, the borough is top of the league.

The Mayor’s Cup was organised by Councillor Oliur Rahman to support the wealth of football clubs in Tower Hamlets and encourage cohesion between them.

Securing funding for the teams in the borough has been an issue.

Chelsea and England footballer John Terry was recently forced to step in to save his former team, Senrab FC, from closing down.

This was despite the club having produced a wealth of top-flight talent including Jermain Defoe, Bobby Zamora, Ledley King and Sol Campbell.

The event was funded entirely from sponsorship and Councillor Rahman said any money left over will go straight back into local charities.

Finals results:

Under 14’s – Westward Boys 2 – Senrab 1

Under 16’s – Juva 2 – Vallance 0

Seniors – East7 2 – Island 1
