A gas leak was reported on Whitechapel Road near Fulborn Street for the second time in less than 24 hours, causing much disruption in the area.

Police officers were first alerted on Sunday at 10:40 pm.

“As a precaution, premises near the location were evacuated and roads were closed pending repairs”, reported the Met to East London Lines.

On Monday at 5:20pm, 19 hours after the first incident, they were re-called to the same place, due to a strong smell of gas near Whitechapel Station. This time, three buildings were evacuated and the London Fire Brigade arrived at the scene with three fire engines and 15 men.

The gas board has not yet confirmed the cause of the leak, although it is thought to have originated in one property.
