Free events week to launch Deptford Lounge

The Deptford Lounge is now open to the public

The Deptford Lounge, a new community centre on Griffin Street, is now officially open to the public. The centre will host a week of free events starting on March 1.

Children’s author Steve Cole will start the week by celebrating World Book Day with a community meet and greet. Author and comic Mark Thomas will also be visiting to read extracts from his latest book ‘Extreme Rambling’.

The launch week will also have a community information day, a film screening, book readings and the recognition festival.

The Deptford Lounge will provide new community facilities including a library, meeting rooms and sports facilities.

The construction of the Deptford Lounge began in 2009. Contractors Galliford Try Partnership employed over 20 per cent of local labourers for the building’s construction and created six work experience placements for local secondary school students.

The Deptford Lounge will also be the new home to the local primary school Tidemill Academy, which will be moving from its original site in Frankham Street.
