Tower Hamlets Council plans to stream all future council meetings online, the Mayor announced on Wednesday evening.

Mayor Lutfur Rahman said that the idea would be “interesting”, when he agreed to it at the heated full council budget meeting at the Town Hall.

The amendment, proposed by Labour Councillor Anwar Khan, aims to increase transparency and make meetings accessible for those residents who currently struggle to reach the Town Hall.

The changes will cost the council £25,000.

The Mayor agreed on several of Labour’s amendments to the budget at the meeting, such as funding for a “Violence Against Women and Girls” worker, and scrapped plans to cut funding for the Greenwich and Docklands Festival.

In response to the amendments proposed by the Conservatives, the Mayor addressed the party leader directly and said: “Councillor Gold, I do not accept any of your amendments.”
