Scottish dancers get in the swing for weekend

Croydon will be getting in the patriotic spirit with various Jubilee street parties this weekend.

There will also be Jubilee themed concerts and plays for creative commemorations of the Royal occasion.

There will also be non-Jubilee related activity with the annual Croydon Folkdance Festival, with an interesting mix of traditional folk dance and music.

Saturday June 2


The 31st International Folkdance Festival will be held at Langley Park School in Beckenham on Saturday

It will be hosted by The Maclennan Scottish group and will also feature travelling groups visiting from Germany and Finland.

The Epping Forest Pipe band will also be performing traditional folk music to accompany the dancing.

Purley Players Perform Crowning Glory

The Purley Players will be performing their player Crowning Glory on Friday and Saturday night, which has been specially written for the Queen’s Jubilee and is set at the time of her coronation.

There will also be a 1950s dress code to recreate the time the Queen came to power.

As well as the play there will be a three-course dinner and a quiz about events during the Queen’s reign.

This event is £13 and starts at 7.30pm.

Jubilee Choir Concert

The Diamond Jubilee Massed Male Choir will perform a concert to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

The choir will perform at Fairfield Hall, which was suitably opened by the Queen Mother 50 years ago.

This choir of 400 men will also perform alongside guest soloist Ann-Louise Straker.

Tickets are £10-15.

Vegetarian Jubilee Picnic

The Young Indian Vegetarians group will be hosting a meat-free Jubilee picnic at Queen’s Garden, Croydon.

Bring your own vegetarian picnic and celebrate with food, music and dance.

Haling Grove Park will be holding a Big Lunch community picnic to celebrate the Jubilee.

There will be a cake competition with prizes for the most delicious and attractive baked goods.

Norbury Green is hosting a Big Lunch event on the Green on Semley Road.

Guests can bring along their own picnic and celebrate the Jubilee with their neighbours.

Old Coulsdon Giant Picnic

Old Coulsdon’s Grange Park will host a Giant Picnic to celebrate the Jubilee weekend.

Bring along your own food and drink or indulge yourself with the barbecue food and ice cream on sale.

There are lots of family fun events, including face painting, a tug of war and lots of games for children to enjoy. There will also be a band playing live jazz to enjoy throughout the day.

Old Coulsdon will also commemorate the occasion with a new street being named Jubilee Way.

This is a free event, 12pm-4pm.
