Fresh appeal over 2010 murder of Hackney DJ

The police and family of a murdered Hackney DJ have renewed an appeal for witnesses or information on the second anniversary of his death.

Wayne Powell, 38, also known as ‘DJ Connoisseur’ was shot dead by a lone gunman in Chingford on July 5,  2010

Powell, a keen bodybuilder, was sitting in his Black BMW close to a gym he used in Higham Station Avenue at around 2310 when was approached by a man. Powell, according to police, got out of his car and went to talk to the man, who shot him, firing four times. The man was last seen running away along a footpath towards Coningsby Gardens. Powell was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

A customer assistant for London Underground at Seven Sisters station in Tottenham, Powell was described as ‘universally popular’, ‘a good man’ and ‘a true gentleman’. A motive for the killing remains unclear. Police have stressed that Powell was not believed to have been involved in ‘criminality or gangs.’

Police are offering a reward of up to £20,000 for anyone to come forward with any information.

Powell’s girlfriend was expecting at the time  and his son, also Wayne, is now one year and eight months old.

The gunman is described as: possibly black, 5”10, wearing a tracksuit, and believed to have used a handgun.

Detective Inspector Dave Rock of Operation Trident, said: ‘Two years have passed and Wayne’s family deserve to know who is responsible for his death.

‘’This was a cold-blooded and cowardly shooting. If you have any information or suspicions about who killed him please come forward.’

Last Friday, his family and friends staged an event celebrating his life  at the Three Sisters pub in Hackney.
