St George’s re-opens after £800,000 revamp

St George’s Pools leisure Centre in Shadwell has re-opened its doors after an £800,000 renovation project.

The project was funded by Tower Hamlets Council and leisure centre operators Better.

The renovations were needed, say the council, because some of the  facilities such as the swimming pool were nearing the end of their operational life and it wanted to ensure that locao peope would have a good quality swimming pool now and for the future.

The renovation has also involved installing new windows, replacing the pool plant systems, an improved reception area and interior and exterior repair works.

Furthermore, with the support of the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), the council were able to replace diving boards which have given the centre the opportunity to develop a diving program.

A new studio will alllow improved programmes for gymnastics and group exercises .

Councilors recently toured the Centre and met local schools which will be using it regularly.

Councillor Rania Khan, lead member for Culture said: “This is a fantastic investment and will benefit residents by giving them a much improved swimming pool and access to a dance studio and a variety of classes. It is a great addition to the borough’s leisure provision.”
