Everyone is getting in the carnival mood as this weekend approaches promising three days off for city-wide celebrations and the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival! We’ve found some great events happening in the ELL boroughs to finish the summer with a flourish.

 

Hackney

The Book Club – Bookstock-On-Sea

25 August, The Book Club, Leonard Street, Shoreditch

The third annual BookStock-on-Sea street festival is happening this bank holiday Sunday at the Book Club. It’s nautical themed and will feature some good old-fashioned seaside fun such as a Punch and Judy show and seaside Bingo as well some ace music and DJs at night including the legandary 1970s NYC disco band Odyssey.

 

Tower Hamlets

Rich Mix – Rich Mix Youth Takeover

23-26 August, Rich Mix 34-37 Bethnal Green Road

This bank holiday weekend is the final weekend of Rich Mix Youth Takeover. The cinema and arts venue is devoting its space to host workshops, Q&As,  and youth-led visual arts exhibitions for people age 16-21 to get involved. Expect a Pre-Carniva special show, dance, art and cinema workshops and discounted cinema tickets throughout the Takeover.

 

Lewisham

The Old Depford Police Station – Ladies Like Pie Art Exhibition 

24-25 August, Old Deptford Police Station 114 Amersham Vale

Come down to the art gallery at the Old Depford Police Station to see the launch of a new exhibition, Ladies Like Pie, which is celebrating by hosting a weekend of community arts activities. Peruse the art while listening to music and spoken word performances taking place all afternoon.

Brockley Jack Studio –  Never Have I seen Mount Fuji (and other plays)

27 August – 7 September Brockley Jack Studio, 410 Brockley Road, New Cross

Get three for one! Three short plays are showing at the Brockley Jack Studio next week, detailing a love story, a ghost story and a confession.

Matthews Yard – Bronx meet Cronx Jazz and Blues festival

25 August Matthews Yard, 1 Matthews Yard, Croydon

The Bronx meet Cronx weekend is a mini-festival at Matthews Yard celebrating all things jazz, blues, RnB and of course, New York. Sunday will see free live blues and jazz music events in the evening and a New York themed brunch served 11am-4pm.
