Metropolitan Police in Lewisham have confirmed that two armed teenagers were arrested yesterday after a bungled bank robbery.

Officers responded to earlier reports that two men had entered a bank in Lewisham town centre carrying a firearm at 3:45pm yesterday.

Armed police tracked the two suspects to the Docklands Light Rail station, which is situated near Lewisham police station.

They were arrested and an imitation firearm was recovered from the scene.

Shocked commuters responded via Twitter with FunkAngel saying: “Armed police in Lewisham arrest armed bank robbers on the train I was about to board. My commute just got a whole lot more terrifying.”

A spokeswoman for Lewisham police said: “A 16 and 17-year-old are currently in custody at a south London police station and helping police with their enquiries.”

The police operation led to minor delays on the DLR service yesterday afternoon.
