Rough Copy’s X Factor journey has come to the ‘end of the road’, after Luke Friend beat them in the public vote.

After the Croydon band missed out on a place in the final, band member Joey spoke to presenter Dermot O’Leary and said: “Just being here is a highlight. I thank Gary for everything he has done for us.”

In the sing off, the boys ironically chose to sing Boys II Men’s ‘End Of The Road’.

In the vote-off, Gary Barlow chose to save his boy band. He praised both acts: “This is harder than usual because the acts are so different. It was an emotional sing off, you’ve both done so well.”

Nicole Scherzinger also chose to save the boys: “Luke you sang one of my favourite songs tonight, you are such a diamond in the rough in this competition. But the act I’m sending through is Rough Copy.”

Calling the decision “simple”, Judge Louis Walsh also chose to save his own act, Luke Friend.

Unable to decide between the bottom two, Sharon Osbourne took the vote to deadlock.

On Saturday’s Beyonce and Elton John themed show, Rough Copy gave stellar performances of Destiny’s Childs’ ‘Survivor’ and Elton John’s ‘Sorry Seems to be The Hardest Word’.

Fans took to Twitter to share their commiserations and messages of good luck for the boyband:

@Alice_smith1 tweeted: “Rough Copy deserved to win tbh, they will be the most successful ones this year.”

@jamaledward: “Big up Rough Copy. I’m sure they’ll go on and do bigger things. Good luck. I look forward to seeing what’s next…”

@MayaJama: “Monday morninnnng. I’m wearing a turtle neck today in honour of the crying one in rough copy last nigh.”
