Driver in custody after paramedics lose battle to save pensioner fatally injured in Croydon road collision

Police arrested have arrested a driver after his car hit a pensioner in a fatal road accident in Croydon. Officers on routine patrol discovered the incident in Selsdon Park Road, at around 9am on Saturday morning.

The 79-year-old man was taken to St Georges Hospital, Tooting, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police have informed the dead man’s family but his name will not be released until he is formally identified.

The driver of a Peugeot 307 involved in the incident near the junction with Farnborough Avenue was arrested as road accident specialists examined the scene.

He is being held in custody on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.
