UKIP’s former candidate for Mayor of Lewisham will face trial after allegations he sexually assaulted a homeless Bulgarian man.

Civil Servant Peter Lello, 44, was accused of assault in May. He denied the charge at Woolwich Crown Court last Friday and is on bail until June next year, when he will stand trial.

He received 7.9% of the vote in Lewisham’s mayoral elections earlier this year. He was also UKIP’s campaign manager for the borough.

He worked as an underwriter at the Government’s Export Credits Guarantee Department and was suspended following his arrest.
