A man from Whitechapel, charged with the murder of another, 43-year-old man, will appear at the Old Bailey today.

Victim John Keenan, who died from head injuries on New Year’s Day, was assaulted following a New Year’s Eve party.

Terry Hamer, a 34-year-old man from Newbold Cottages, Sidney Street, appeared in custody at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday after being charged with Keenan’s murder. Hamer was remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey today.

Emergency services pronounced Keenan dead at the scene on Sidney Street in Tower Hamlets where he was found at 1:30 am on January 1.

A post-mortem examination at Popular Mortuary found that the cause of death was a brain injury.

Hamer was arrested along with a 25-year-old woman, who was bailed until February pending further enquiries.

A police spokeswoman said on their arrest: “It is understood that an altercation had taken place during a private party at the address and that the victim and those arrested are known to each other.”

This was the second murder case from Whitechapel to appear in Thames Magistrates’ Court last week.

A 40-year-old woman was killed in a Denning Point flat on Commercial Street, one mile from where Keenan was killed. 34-year-old Abdulqadir Abdullah was charged with her murder.
