Man released on bail in connection to rape allegation

A 41-year-old man has been released on bail after being arrested in connection with the rape of a woman in Grove Park, Lewisham.

Police said that the 41-year-old man was arrested in connection with the rape, but was later granted bail to a date in December pending further inquiries.

The 20-year-old woman went to police last Wednesday, after being attacked shortly after 9pm near the end of Marvels Lane in Grove Park.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Sexual offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command are undertaking the investigation.

They are appealing for any information about the suspect who has been described as a white man in his late 30s; 5ft 9ins tall, wearing a black hoody and jogging bottoms with trainers.

The young woman has been taken a specialist sexual assault referral centre in London.

Detailed crime statistics for Lewisham show that violence and sexual offences are the most common felonies in the area. According to statistics released by the Metropolitan Police, 651 incidents of violence and sexual offences occurred between October 2014 and September 2015, accounting for 26.52% of Lewisham crime.
