Moped rider killed in Hackney police chase

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into a crash in Hackney where a teenage moped rider died after being chased by police. Another teenager was injured and taken to hospital,

Police were called out to Kingsland Road just after 11am on Tuesday after reports that a moped had fled the scene following a suspected theft.

Shortly afterwards, the moped was located in Stamford Road. Officers pursued the two riders on the moped when they failed to stop for police. The National Police Air Service was also called in to help monitor the chase.

About thirty minutes later the moped collided with a van in Clapton Common. Two young men, thought to be in their late teens, were injured. Officers provided first aid at the scene. London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance also attended.

According to Metropolitan Police, one of the moped riders was pronounced dead on the scene shortly before 1pm. The other was hospitalised and is in a serious but stable condition at an East London Hospital.

Police say next of kin are yet to be informed. Formal identification and a post-mortem are awaited.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into the accident. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards was also informed.
