An Islamic studies teacher has been jailed for 22 years for raping a 14-year-old pupil and abusing her over a five-year period.
Mohammed Islam, 31, from Bethnal Green began abusing the girl in 2009 when she was nine whilst teaching the Koran at an Islamic centre in East London.
Judge Sarah Paneth sentenced Islam to 19 years in prison as well as issuing an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and placing him on the sex offender’s register on February 26.
Islam told Snaresbrook Crown Court that the victim had initiated sex with him but later admitted to rape and sexual activity with a child.
In July 2015 the girl was found to be pregnant. Robert Brown, prosecuting, told the court that the victim opted to delay her abortion to prove that Islam was the father.
The girl’s father, in a victim impact statement, said: “What Mohammed has done to my daughter has broken me. I am devastated. I am so angry. I only hope and pray for her that this abuse will not have a long term effect on her.”
DC Irene Smith, who led the investigation, said: “This was a very disturbing case with a very vulnerable victim.
“Islam did what he could to mislead detectives, initially denying any sexual assault took place.
“I hope today’s [February 26] verdict goes some way to helping the victim and her family move on from what has been a horrendous ordeal.”
