BThe first Saturday of May saw the return of the Street Feast’s Model Market for its third year in Lewisham.

The location is hard to beat, set in an indoor and outdoor night market just outside Lewisham shopping centre, where everyone spent as much time exploring the various stalls as they did enjoying the entertainment.

The market is surrounded by various food stations, wooden tables and chairs, night lights and a little play area for kids: a scenic spot for summer fun in the likes of couples, students, and young families.

I arrived at the food market at 5.30pm, empty bellied and ready to get stuck into the different flavours of food. Strolling around the numerous stands, weighing up my options, my attention was finally drawn to Mama’s Jerk Station, a Caribbean cuisine that is famous for its fiery jerk sausage and outstanding veggie bean cake.

After munching on my jerk chicken, I popped in next door to SE Cakery, also known as “the hip hop of baking”.  Their cut-down brownie bites are perfect for nibbling with a nice cup of cold lemon iced tea.

Other dishes tried and recommended by the workers at Model Market includes Mother Flipper, Hot Box and Club Mexicana, Rola Wala, Sub Cult, You Doughnut! and Up In My Grill.

Food can be washed down with drinks courtesy of the market’s returning bars. Options included are Slushy Bar, the cocktail-led Rotary Bar, the Winyl, which is a wine spot, and the tiki-tastic Rum Shack.

Despite the delicious food, just an hour into the market the power cut out, which meant the music was off, food could not be cooked for about an hour or so and people were not allowed into the premises until everything was sorted out and back to normal.

Regardless of this setback, organisers were great and friendly and people were certainly getting their money’s worth.

Ezekiel Ola, a university student, said: “I’m having so much fun right now. Street Feast have done well because it’s good to know that you can go somewhere on the weekend to mingle and eat as much as you can afford.”

Model Market will be staying in Lewisham until October 1 this year, offering its signature mix of food, booze and good time vibes.
