A teenager from Thornton Heath admitted terrorism charges at the Old Bailey earlier today.

Finnish student Cubeyda Hassan Jama, 19, pleaded guilty to violating the Terrorism Act 2006 by “engaging in conduct in preparation for giving effect to intention to commit acts of terrorism.”

In an attempt to travel to Syria or Iraq to join the ranks of Daesh in February, Jama was apprehended by detectives from the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command when he tried to fly from Stansted Airport to Bucharest, Romania on February 5.

Jama moved to the UK in 2010 to live with his father in London Road, Thornton Heath and then went on to enrol as a computer science student at Middlesex University.

At Jama’s previous hearing in February, his defence lawyer, Amirtha Kylahsum said his client intended to plead innocent.

He will be sentenced on 28 July.
