A man has suffered serious head injuries after collision with a council van in London Fields, East London.

The man, who is believed to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital by air ambulance yesterday.

The emergency services had received a call at 10:35am and after they arrived to the scene, the barbecue area was  sealed off.

The man was believed to be lying on the ground when he was struck by the park van, a Scotland Yard spokesperson explained.

A Hackney Council spokesperson said: “The driver was going round picking up rubbish in the park. Police kept the vehicle and the driver at the site.

“The injured man has  been taken to hospital for treatment and our thoughts are with them and their family.

The council added that it will be investigating this “serious incident” with the police and announced that the “barbecue area will be closed until further notice”.

Metropolitan police said that this incident is not being treated as suspicious.
