Following Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to hold a snap general election on June 8, Eastlondonlines is launching a series of election-based stories leading up to and beyond polling day.

From the area’s Labour strongholds to swing constituencies and key battlegrounds, ELL will bring you political coverage from the East London boroughs.

Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987, will look to sustain the hold on Hackney that Labour has enjoyed since 1950. Lewisham West and Penge awaits a new Labour candidate in place of Jim Dowd.

The two Labour MPs representing the constituencies within Tower Hamlets will be hoping to hang on to the jobs they have held since the 2010 General Election. Croydon Central, as proven by 2015 election data, is one of the most marginal seats in the race and is therefore a key target.

There’s a lot to keep an eye on in preparation for voting day. To kick off the series, ELL will bring you profiles on the boroughs and key constituencies.

While national current polls are leaning towards a Conservative majority, the past year’s events at ballot boxes around the world have proven that outcomes cannot always be predicted.
