Plans have been approved for Britain’s second-tallest skyscraper to go ahead in Croydon.

One Lansdowne Road will consist of two towers with 68 and 41 stories, which will be linked by an 11-storey podium structure.

This will make it the second-tallest skyscraper in Britain, overtaking Canary Wharf, and only just being beaten by The Shard.

The towers will contain 794 residential units and 35,000 sqm of office space, as well as retail, a glass-bottomed swimming pool, a gym, bars, restaurants, and a public viewing gallery, offering panoramic views across the Capital and Surrey.

The apartments will come with a concierge service- with the flats on offer to range from studio apartments to three-bedroom homes.

The new build is being developed by real estate investors, Guildhouse Rosepride, who are convinced this will transform Croydon into a South London hotspot, with a £1.5 billion investment from Westfield and Hammerson, creating a brand new shopping centre opposite the One Lansdowne Road site- just a short walk from both East and West Croydon stations.

David Hudson, Chief Executive of Guildhouse Rosepride, told EastLondonLines: “There will be around 300 jobs on the finished site. That, obviously, is in addition to the construction jobs in the meantime.

“The great challenge for Croydon is to change perceptions and this scheme will help it to become a destination in its own right. This will help to achieve that because in my opinion, it will be a world-famous building.”

Members of Croydon Council’s planning committee have already voted unanimously to approve the ambitious scheme, which has already been a work-in-progress since 2005, and now requires the backing of Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Currently, there is only one other major office scheme being planned in Croydon, and Guildhouse Rosepride are very optimistic in hoping that One Lansdowne Road will attract major new employers from across Central London.

One Lansdowne Road has received just two letters of objection from local residents.

The Shard is currently the tallest building in the UK standing at a whopping 306m, but is set to closely be followed by One Lansdowne Road which is being built to 236m- only one metre taller than One Canada Square in Canary Wharf.

Amanda Rosas, 23, a publishing sales assistant living in Croydon told EastLondonLines: “I think this is really cool and really speaks for the level of development plans going on in Croydon right now.

More and more skyscrapers are appearing and that isn’t to mention the Westfield shopping centre that’s going to be built- it’s an exciting time to live here.”

It is hoped that work will begin on demolishing the existing buildings on the site by next summer and the estimated build time is just under five years.
