Weekend sports and leisure events in Tower Hamlets to mark International Women’s Day

Tower Hamlets Council are offering free discounted sports and activities to local women across the borough this weekend in celebration of International Women’s Day today, Friday.

Activities on offer at various locations in Tower Hamlets include netball, dodgeball, zumba, fencing, yoga, steps and badminton. Residents can also enjoy baking sessions, refreshment stands and hair and beauty stations. All are open to women only.

The events are the climax of International Women’s Week which has been celebrated in the borough this week.

Pauline Stewart, Senior Sports Development Officer for Tower Hamlets, said: “The Sports Development team have put on a week’s programme with partners within the community giving females 10 years and older opportunities to participate or try new taster sporting or exercise sessions, engaging the inactivates by also offering mini beauty pampering sessions, enticing them to participate, meet new people and socialise with others hoping they would continue engaging in physical activity for not only health and wellbeing but fun and enjoyment in a male free environment.”

The events are being held at leisure centres, such as Poplar Baths and St Georges Leisure Centre, town halls, parks and community centres across the whole of Tower Hamlets in order to reach the into the heart of the community. Particular attention is paid to those who are not regular sports enthusiasts and caters to all age ranges, with the options of ‘walking netball’, over ’50s Pilates’ and ‘games for mothers with children’.

The weekend highlight is the Trojans Basketball Club Tournament on Sunday. Entry is £10 per team of 6-10 players, at the John Orwell Sports Centre, Wapping.
