A family and community in Lewisham are in deep shock and mourning today following the death of a 16 year old schoolboy from Sydenham in a stabbing incident. Nick Pearton was killed on the Home Park Recreation Ground, off Sydenham Road at around 6.15 pm last night.

Detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are trying to piece together the detail of what happened. The teenage boy died from a cardiac arrest after receiving his wounds and despite comprehensive efforts by the London Ambulance Service to resuscitate him.

The Press Association reported that Nick’s father,Vince, said his family were too shocked to talk about what had happened:

“There’s nothing I can say, we can’t take it in.”

By dawn this morning two bouquets of flowers had been left at the scene of the attack. One card said: “Sleep well angel.”

A public memorial site on Facebook was started today and by lunch-time had in the region of five hundred tributes and expressions of condolence. Messages on the social Internet platform entitled: ‘R.i.P Nick Pearton, Gone But Never Forgotten’ included:

“Nick your gonna be missed so much, loads of love being sent out the family xxxx gone but you will never be forgotton xxxxxx”

“R.I.P nick gone but not forgotten, i keep going over all the memorys in my head of me and you.. Only the good die young always in our hearts. Sleep tight hun xxx”

It is being reported that Nick was stabbed and beaten as he tried to escape up to 10 attackers. Witnesses say a gang of boys armed with knives, baseball bats and sticks chased him across a park. He was observed staggering into a fast food shop on the opposite side of a busy road calling for help and it is believed his mother, Kim, ran to the shop and tried to comfort him after being alerted by his younger brother.

Police have arrested a number of youths who have been detained for questioning. They are investigating reports that the incident may be linked to tensions between rival gangs of local youths. The murder has generated national coverage in the media and raised the issue of young people carrying and using knives. Detectives are examining an extensive crime scene because of the extent and length of the attack across the park. His death brings the toll of teenagers murdered in London this year to 10.
