The owner of a mini market was fined after Tower Hamlets Council in Poplar found a serious cockroach infestation.

Ibrahim Ali, owner of TSA Exotic Trade Centre Limited, at 231 East India Dock Road, was fined more than £2,500. He also pleaded guilty to five food hygiene offences on Friday 8th October at the Thames Magistrate Court.

The council’s Environmental Heath Officers discovered the infestation during a routine visit on the 13th of August 2009. A large number of cockroaches and cockroach eggs were found near the food counter.  The infestation was particularly significant in the butchery area; around a display fridge containing uncovered raw meat.

A Council spokesman said: “ Regular visits are planned in the future to the food property to ensure that the area remains clean and safe”.
