Hackney MP Diane Abbott will appear on popular Channel 4 show Celebrity Come Dine With Me tonight.

The Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington – who was recently appointed as Shadow Minister for Public Health – follows in the footsteps of politicians Edwina Curry and Lembit Opik, who have both appeared on the show previously.

The Cambridge-educated Ms Abbott is, however, the first serving MP to take part in the cooking competition, which is more well-known for onscreen tensions than any culinary achievements.

Ms Abbott will compete against TV presenter Terry Christian, choreographer Wayne Sleep and WAG Danielle Lloyd – who was involved in a bitter race row alongside the late Jade Goody while appearing on 2007’s Celebrity Big Brother – in a bid to win £1000 for charity.

Contestants also receive payment for taking part and Ms Abbott – who has admitted “I don’t have any strengths in the kitchen” – was paid £3000 for the 36-hour shoot.

Ms Abbott, who was the first black woman to be elected to parliament in 1987, failed in her attempt to become Labour leader earlier this year.
