Where to find them: Gardens and hedrows

When to hear them: All year round, most vocal March-June

Diet: Insects, caterpillars, seeds, nuts

If you live in Croydon, sit in your garden, or take a walk through the park, and there is a good chance you’ll see this brightly-coloured little garden bird; the borough’s most common species.

Though they look delicate, these are some of Britain’s best survivors; flourishing throughout London and in every other part of the country too, all year round.

You can bring them to your garden with a simple peanut feeder. Try putting up a nestbox, and there’s a good chance that they’ll stay to breed.
