Bank Holiday events in Tower Hamlets

Snapshots: Rich Mix

As the carnival spirit builds up, Rich Mix will host 14 hours of Carnival celebrations in partnership with Global Carnival Centre.

Curated by world renowned Carnival guru Paz Nindi, the event will kick off with Soca Aerobics. The sessions are open to anyone wanting to try out the latest Carnival moves. There will be screenings of archive Carnival films including Steven Rudder’s documentary about the late Lawrence Noel, who was the first man to make and present costumes at Notting Hill Carnival, a short film about the work Ruff Diamonds does with young people in West and East London, and a compilation of UK’s best Carnivals from Pax Nindi’s extensive collection of global carnivals.

Evening performances will include Calypso music from Notting Hill Carnival’s ruling Calypso Monarch winner and the BBC’s Artist in Residence Alexander D Great, UK’s top Soca artist and producer Scrappy, Mangrove Steel Band’s Steelpan Trainer and Reggae singer Bubbles, Pax Nindi of Harare Dread and his Shonalypso (his original Zimbabwean Calypso). Other DJs will include DJ Sezuma and the father of Soca music Denis and his unit Hotwax. Umbela Arts will also return with their final rehearsal for participation in the Notting Hill Carnival parade 2011.

To complement these special Carnival events, authentic Caribbean food will be served up.
