A Greenwich teenager was crowned Star of the Future yesterday as part of a music competition held at Lewisham Shopping Centre.

RJay, 19, won time in London recording studio, Chapel Studios, after performing two of his own tracks in front of a panel of judges including the Young Mayor and the Deputy Young Mayor of Lewisham.

The singer, real name Ryan John, impressed the panel with his tune ‘First Love’, and Judge Jason S, a presenter on Represent FM, even compared the budding star to Jason Derulo.

Chezney Speed-Skyers, the Deputy Young Mayor, added: “It reminded me of something that would be on MTV.”

RJay was picked as one of five finalists after submitting a two-minute recording to the competition organiser, Pegasus PR. The final five performed on November 12, before the judges picked their top two – Rjay and duo Carla & Victor – to return for the final.

Singer Carla George, 30, and guitarist Victor Elliot, 48, impressed with their song ‘Love With a Ring Dot Com’. Ian Pledger, from music promotion company Insomnia music, said: “Carla, your voice is brilliant, great range. You worked really well together.”

Following the decision, Elliot said: “It was great fun, a great experience, but [RJay] is what the crowd went for today. On another day we may have got through.”

Speaking about his plans for the future after winning the competition, RJay said: “I’m going to make the most of it. I’m going to university in Kingston to study music production. It depends how the music goes as well though, you never know what’s going to come up. But that’s my plan right now – to go to uni.”
