Police confirm body found in Regent’s Canal is missing EastEnders actor Gemma McCluskie

Police have confirmed that the torso found in Regent’s Canal on Tuesday is that of missing EastEnders actor Gemma McCluskie.

Gemma, 29, went missing from her home in Bethnal Green on March 1. A 35-year-old man who was arrested on Tuesday in relation to the discovery remains in custody.

According to the BBC and Sky, the man in custody is Gemma’s brother, Tony, who had been part of the search for her. However, police have not confirmed this.

Gemma appeared as Kerry Skinner in over 30 episodes of the hit soap. Co-stars Natalie Cassidy and Brooke Kinsella both appealed for help on Twitter to find her.

Officers are now keen to trace Gemma’s last known movements before her murder. They are aware that she attended the opening of the new Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel on Thursday 1 March at 11:30pm, wearing a yellow long-sleeved top with a round neck and navy-blue leggings. She was also carrying a Louis Vuitton bag with beige handles and brown-coloured end panels. She was also thought to be carrying her blackberry mobile phone which had a white phone case.

Police are yet to find these items have not been recovered.

Detective Superintendent Fiona Mallon, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said: “It is important that we piece together Gemma’s movements from Wednesday 29 February until the discovery in Regent’s Canal in Hackney on Tuesday 6 March. We also urge anyone with any significant information about this case to contact us as soon as possible. In particular we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around her home address in Pelter Street in Bethnal Green.”
