EastLondonLines spoke to John Russell, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Greenwich and Lewisham, about his campaign.

His pledges

• One-hour bus tickets, part-time travel cards, and early bird fares

• 250,000 affordable new homes; set up a community land trust

• Reinstate Safer Neighbourhood Team sergeants

• Safer cycling

• A single system for street recycling; cleaner air: “London is continually breaking EU safety standards on air quality.”

We asked Russell his views on the occupation of empty homes in the borough by Lewisham People Before Profit.

Correction: in the video, we identify the Occupy movement as initiating the action, and Russell follows our lead. But in fact, the empty properties were actually occupied by Lewisham People Before Profit, not Occupy.

Russell also discussed the other key issues in Greenwich and Lewisham.

Having served as a local councillor in Forest Hill for four years, Russell works as a photographer and is currently the chair of Widehorizons Outdoor Education Trust, an independent charity for disadvantaged children.
