East London street style: Young vs old

Iconic designer Dame Vivienne Westwood has caused controversy of late by claiming that only people over 70 know how to dress. It seems that, on the streets of East London at least, it is the more seasoned stylistas who dress with the most confidence.

“I prefer style to fashion, I wear what I like when I like, and I don’t follow trends”, said one well-dressed lady in Lewisham.

It is clear from the video that young people are by no means lagging behind in the style stakes. They know how to turn heads, incorporating the best of old and new with an eclectic mix of vintage finds and the latest offerings from the high street.

However, they aren’t so sure that they have style. For the younger generation it seems that feeling comfortable and finding clothes that say something about your personality is what matters the most.

“I really like finding clothes that are vintage and not like what other people have. It’s a good way to express yourself and be individual”, a stylish student in New Cross told us.
