The public will get an opportunity to vote for the best UK Festival later this month.

BBC Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend has acquired five nominations in this year’s UK Festival Awards.

The free-ticketed festival has been acknowledged in the run up for Best Major Festival, Best New Festival, Best Dance Event, Best Toilets and Best headline performance for Jay-Z.

A panel of UK music journalist’s shortlisted potential winners in each group and the winners are to be decided by a public vote ending October 31.

Jason Carter, the head of popular music and live events at the BBC said that the festival “was the most ambitious event in Radio 1’s history.”

He said it “brought together one hundred thousand music fans to celebrate the best in UK and international music and shine a spotlight on to East London.”

The BBC Radio 1’s largest ever-free event took place June 24-25 and over one hundred artists performed across 6 stages. Super stars Jay-Z and Rihanna both headlined.

Carter said: “It’s fantastic to see all the hard work and effort from everyone involved recognized with nominations in the Festival Awards.”

The annual UK Festival Awards look to highlight and commend Britain’s music festival scene and Hackney Weekend is up against the likes of Leeds, Reading, Creamfields, Wireless and T in the Park.

The weekend was delivered by the BBC in partnership with Hackney Council and was part of the London 2012 Festival in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Winners of the public vote will be announced on December 3 at London’s Roundhouse.
