A headstone built in the memory of Croydon servicemen who have lost their lives since the end of World War Two will be unveiled next week.

The ceremony will take place next Wednesday at Croydon Cemetary, where Mayor of Croydon Eddy Arram will lay a wreath by the memorial, located inside the cemetery.

The event, organised by the council, will pay tribute in particular to those who have died in the recent hostilities in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The families of Private Jonathan Monk, Rifleman Danny Simpson and Rifleman Peter Aldrigde, who all come from Croydon and died in Afghanistan have been invited to attend the ceremony.

Arram said: “This memorial will remember the servicemen and women from Croydon who gave their lives fighting for the peace and prosperity of this country.

“It will be a place of tranquility for visitors from present and future generations to reflect on the sacrifices those brave servicemen and women have made, something for which we remain grateful and must never forget.”
