Hearing at Old Bailey for New Years Day murder

The Old Bailey

Dean Smith, 25, from Hackney, appeared at the Old Bailey on Tuesday charged with the murder of Aarron McKoy and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Smith appeared at the Central Criminal Court for a first hearing.

McKoy was shot dead on Porthool Lane in Clerkenwell, in the early hours of New Year’s Day, after also celebrating his 22nd birthday at Clerkenwell House Wine Bar.

Police said the murder had followed an altercation outside Clerkenwell Bar, during which a 24-year-old man was also stabbed as a result, violence escalated and McKoy was chased down the road and shot.

Police said the stabbing victim was subsequently taken to hospital, treated and discharged.

Two other men, both in their 20s, were arrested in connection with McKoy’s death.

One was released on police bail until March 6 and the other was released with no further action.

The trial will begin on April 13.
