Dave, owner of Sounds Around, a local shop selling movie posters, fake blood and other theatrical accoutrements passed away on January 31, and his shop has been closed for bereavement since.
The popular Brockley high street shop and was founded by Dave’s father in the 1960s. Dave ran the store for over 40 years together with three generations of his family. He is survived by his 97 year-old mother, sister Pam, niece Debbie and nephew Bradley.
Neighbours and customers remember him fondly on twitter, personal blogs and to those peeking in the windows of the now silent shop.
Posters taped to the front of the building show an outpouring of support and condolences from the local community, as passersby who remembered Dave expressed their sympathies in messages scrawled on the bereavement notice:
“Always kind to my children. Missed by all. Best wishes”
“So very sad and sorry to hear of this. You will be greatly missed”
“Thank you for everything Dave. You will be missed”
“So sorry to hear about Dave-a truly magical man. We’ll miss him”
Sounds Around, the “everything store”, as the customers described it, will remain closed until further notice.
Very sad news. Visited the shop last week on the promise to my small son to buy him a new Cap Gun and saw the notice on the door about Dave’s passing. This was a great little shop a little bit of a bygone era. Some much of my childhood memories came flooding back each time I visitedSounds Around. I hope the family decide to re open this institution when the time is right. Dave was a lovely man and always gave me a free film poster when I rented a movie.
