Woman dies in Croydon car crash – four injured

A woman has died after being hit by a car in the early hours of this morning in Purley. Four other people were left hospitalised.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene around 4am following reports that a car had collided with two pedestrians on Godstone Road near the junction with St James Road, Purley.

The victim, believed to be 40, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 5am.

The second pedestrian, a male, suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to hospital to receive treatment.

The car, a red Citroën Saxo, was travelling in the direction of Purley prior to the collision.

A Metropolitan police spokesman said: “The three occupants of the car, two males and one female, have all been taken to a south London hospital for treatment. None of their injuries are believed serious.

“The driver of the car, a man aged 25, has also been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“Officers from the Road Death Investigation Unit will investigate.”
