Gavin Barwell, Conservative MP for Croydon Central, has responded to a new poll that suggests he may lose his seat in the 2015 general election.

“Croydon Central is a marginal seat,” he told the Croydon Guardian. “I’ve never taken people’s support for granted and I never will. I’ve done this job to the best of my ability and at the next election the people of Croydon Central will get to decide if I deserve to go on doing it.”

The poll, conducted by Conservative peer Lord Ashcroft, shows that the party are likely to lose their seats in six London constituencies. The results were announced at Saturday’s “Victory 2015” conference and found that Labour would have gained 109 seats nationally had an election been held that weekend.

The survey showed that Conservatives are nine points behind Labour in London’s marginal seats. Barwell won his seat in 2010 by a margin of 2,969 votes.

Barwell took to Twitter on Tuesday to comment on the poll, describing it as “interesting research”.
