A mother filmed shouting racist abuse at fellow passengers on a tram in south London will be sentenced this month after admitting her guilt.

Emma West, 36, was arrested after footage was posted on YouTube showing her racially abusing other people on board the tram in Croydon. It was viewed by millions of people after appearing online in November 2011, having been filmed the previous month.

West, from Grenville Road, New Addington, south London, pleaded guilty to a racially aggravated public order offence of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour when she appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Monday, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Initially, West pleaded not guilty to the charges of racially aggravated intentional harassment and assault.

The trial was adjourned several times to allow for further assessment of West’s mental state but began on May 10, 2013.

West will be sentenced at the same court on June 24.

“My Tram Experience”, the footage on YouTube, was viewed nearly 2.2 million times within 24 hours of its release.

Police asked YouTube to remove the video from the website.
