A Lewisham police officer has been jailed for six months after being found with more than 200 images of child pornography.

Sargent Sanjay Rai, 40, was found to have more than 200 images and videos of children aged between 12 and 15 on his computer, which was seized by the Metropolitan Police as part of the investigation.

The collection included 127 ‘level-four’ images, the second most serious type of material.

The officer was then found guilty of four counts of making indecent images of children by the Southwark Crown Court on September 10, 2013

Rai, who was commended three times for bravery during his 20-year service to the force, claimed it was part of his duty to download pornographic images as crime-prevention.

The Court reported that Rai showed no signs of remorse in respect to the accusations, and denied the four counts of making indecent images of children.

Rai was sentenced on October 7 and will be listed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
