A teenage judo star from Catford has been selected to represent England following his performance at the British Championships last year.

Leonardo Bertocchi, a year 11 pupil from Colfe’s School, ranked third in the country after winning bronze at the British Judo Championships in the under 50kg category.

The 15-year-old said: “Last year was very good for me and I’m really excited to now be in the England squad, competing in Judo at the highest level.”

He added that his family and friends have been supportive in helping him to get this far, “but now being in the England Squad means training four nights and around six hours a week; obviously I have my work and revision to do as well.”

Andy Foster, Head of GCSE Performance at Colfe’s school, said: “I’m absolutely delighted for Leo; he has done tremendously well to get to this level with his judo. All Leo’s teachers will do everything we can to continue to support him.  Well done Leo – we are all very proud of you.”

Bertocchi has been doing Judo competitively for six years and trains three times a week.

His first event as part of the squad will be in the Midlands this February.
