East London is filled with activities this week and once again there is something for everyone.

As National Storytelling Week comes to an end, there are storytelling events for kids and adults as well as workshops for those who want to get started themselves. The inimitable Stacy Makishi brings her one-woman show to the East End fusing comedy with a unique take on American culture. Jazz ensemble the Basin Street Brawlers take us back to the 1920s at Wilton’s Music hall and over the weekend, Little Nan’s Bar, the Deptford pub with a dedicated following, is celebrating its first birthday.

Alter Ego

Hackney’s biggest talent search for 13 to19 year olds, with guest judges Matt Henry (The Voice), Bless Beats (Music Producer) and Jasmine Dotiwala (BBC/MTV presenter). The winner will be mentored by industry professionals and will receive exclusive prizes.

Storytelling Workshop for Beginners (For age 18+)

February 8

An interactive workshop that aims to provide aspiring storytellers with the skills they need. Part of National Storytelling Week, the session will be run by Nell Phoenix, a full-time storyteller in schools, museums and theatres. No prior experience required.

The Falsettos by Stacy Makishi

February 6 - February 7

Stacy Makishi’s solo show is influenced by stand-up, American popular culture and has been described as compassionate, uncompromising and joyously absurd. A mixture of theatre and comedy, The Falsettos is on at Toynbee Studios.

Basin Street Brawlers at Wilton’s Music Hall

February 10

The jazz band will be playing beautiful melodies from the 1920s and 1930 at the Mahogany Bar of the famous music hall. The Brawlers have been headliners at the London Swing Festival, their style has been described as unique and powerful reminiscent of the Louis Armstrong All Stars.

Little Nan’s Bar - First Birthday Celebrations

Recently voted one of five “best cosy pubs in London”, Little Nan’s bar is having it’s first birthday party. Expect a unique selection of cocktails, stalls with gifts and crafts, and cakes from local favourite MAYA Bakery.

Storytelling with Sandra Agard

As National Storytelling Week draws to a close, Sandra Agard will be at Croydon Central Children’s Library telling tales drawn from African-Caribbean Oral Traditions, for all the family.

Musical Showcase Event

A hip-hop showcase supporting local MC’s and rappers, featuring presenters from Edge fm.
