East London has the rhythm to shake off your late winter blues, with African drumming classes and live DJ sets across the boroughs to get your heart pounding. Music is also in focus through the camera lens, with a Spotlight talk on music video making and an exhibition of band photographs.

 

POTTERY CLASSES

Monday March 3

Lewisham art house is offering classes to those adults who are interested in learning the process of hand-crafting pottery and spinning clay on the wheel. Beginners are welcome!

BELLY DANCING

Tuesday March 4

For all ladies, no matter what age or size, this is a fun class taught by Maria-Louisa, where she will teach the art of moving. £3 per class. Held at Age Exchange Reminiscence Centre.

AFRICAN DRUMMING FOR ADULTS

Friday February 28 onwards

Horniman Museum and Nzinga Dance will be holding African Drumming Courses for Adults until March 30. The Sunday classes are suitable for complete beginners, and those who have drummed a little in the past.

JOYZINE PHOTO EXHIBITION

Friday February 28 onwards

Online mag Joyzine has been following the indie music scene in south London since 2003, capturing exciting new acts with words and photos. This exhibition will house a selection of images of bands such as The Priscillas and Oyama taken by Joyzine editor Paul Maps. Runs until March 9. Entry is free.

SOUL FRIDAY

Friday February 28

Boisdale at Canary Wharf hosts BBC broadcasting legend, Robert Elms, who is presenting The Motown Live Review. The two-hour show will feature ‘some of the best soul singers and musicians in the world’. Doors open 9.45pm.

MACBETH

Saturday March 1

Poplar HARCA, Tower Hamlets and Spotlight Youth Arts Centre open their all night performance of Macbeth. The performance will run over eight weekends set in a secret east London location.

JIM PERRIN BOOK LAUNCH AND READING

Jim Perrin will be launching his collection of short stories: A Snow Goose, and reading from his book of Shipton and Tilman at Pages of Hackney Bookshop.

UNDER 21’S OPEN MIC NIGHT

With live DJ performances all night from local talent, Epicentre offers all ages under 21 to an open mic night.

Tuesday March 4

Screening of ‘Paid in Full’, followed by some classic hip-hop music for everyone to enjoy. There will be free entry all night and drinks are cheap and cheerful.

WHIRLYGIG CINEMA'S SPOTLIGHT: MUSIC VIDEOS

Wednesday March 5

Every month, three emerging filmmakers are given just 30 minutes each to screen and talk about their films, providing a gripping insight into their background, ideas and filmmaking process. At the end of the night they take part in a Q&A session, giving audiences the chance to probe further. This month's spotlight is on music videos. Tickets are £4 advance or £5 at the door.
