Hackney Wick is well known in East London for its vibrant cultural scene, and canal-side bar and restaurant Number 90 is the latest addition.
The industrial space has been developed by the proprietors over to house exhibitions, events and gigs in a ‘multi-art’ venue, alongside the restaurant.
This weekend, Number 90’s official opening includes a programme of carefully selected local artists, street food chefs and musicians.
The building, a stones-throw from Hackney Wick station was formerly a warehouse and squat.
“When I came back, and discovered it was up for rent and thought – wow,” founder Bruno Cabral says. “We ended up taking the whole building. It was a massive move for us.”
“We’re doing this because it’s something we’ve always dreamed of doing. We’ve been in Hackney Wick for 7 years. I couldn’t really see myself anywhere else.”
The menu will feature a mixture of French, Brazilian and English cuisine. “We put the food that we want and like together and there we go,” says Cabral.
“When we interviewed our chef Leon, he showed us the tattoos on his hands. One said pork, the other beef. He said ‘I love my food, this is what I do for a living.’”
Cabral describes how the chef lifted his shirt and showed him his tattoo, a massive steak across the chest accompanied by a fork and knife crossing each other.
“I could see this guy’s passionate about what he does.”
Number 90 will house a variety of different events across the week, including a Bingo night with live performances, a Sunday roast with Jazz, movie nights with burgers, and the opening of a new exhibition once a month.
Cabral says: “We focus on artists from Hackney Wick, working with the community, and expanding out into East London.”
“We’re not charging anyone to come in. As with any small business at the moment, we struggle – but we love what we do.”
Number 90 has recently been nominated for Best Local Business at 2014’s The Mayor of Hackney’s Business Awards, which rewards business success in the borough.
The restaurant will be holding it’s official opening on Friday March 7.
