Drama in the Mix is an annual event organised by Rich Mix Creative Learning based in Hackney.

The event was the culmination of 6 months work that saw children from local secondary schools write and perform their own Radio plays.

The children performed their plays in front of a live audience and panel of judges; including former EastEnder’s star and local celebrity James Alexandrou.

There were 8 plays in total all centered around the theme of ‘Brazil 2014’ and explored such themes as the World Cup, the rain forest, and finding friendship in the unlikeliest of places.

Now in its fourth year, the aim of the project is to give young people a chance to broaden their skills in English, Drama, and Media, with writing and acting workshops from industry professionals.

Drama in the Mix is just one part of a wider initiative at Rich Mix to celebrate the creative potential of the local community.

Our reporter Matt Bentman was there with Jess Loveless who coordinated the event to tell us more.

One person in particular who knows the importance of encouraging creativity in young people is James Alexandrou, a former student of Chingford Foundation School, one of the schools taking part in yesterday’s showcase.

We asked James about how he came to be involved with Rich Mix.

A full list of upcoming events at Rich Mix and ways to get involved can be found at their website.
